“The fragrantly sweet juiciness and deep red color of strawberries can brighten up both the taste and aesthetics of any meal. Not only do they taste great they are among the fruits and vegetables ranked highest in health-promoting antioxidants” (WHFoods). It’s rare to find someone who doesn’t enjoy a nice, ripe strawberry, and no strawberry tastes quite as good as one picked right from the plant. In fact, there is an entire day dedicated to harvesting these tasty, red berries.

May 20 is Pick Strawberries Day, and whether you choose to participate on that particular day or on another day of the season, we have a couple local places with strawberries ready to be picked and savored:

Critzer Family Farm: The strawberries at this Afton, VA farm are beautiful, ripe and part of a large crop just waiting to be baked into pies, crushed into jam, or eaten with a dash of sugar. For $2.29/lb, you can pick your own, but they also offer pre-picked berries at the sales house. Critzer Family Farm is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Seamans’ Orchard: The Seaman families Strawberry Patch in Roseland, VA open every year in May. As with Critzer Family Farm, you can pick your own strawberries at $2.29/lb or purchase pre-picked fruit. Seamans’ Orchard is open 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and 12:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. (Be sure to call the orchard before arriving to pick to make sure that the strawberries are plentiful enough: (434) 277-8130)

Once you’ve picked our fill of strawberries, bring them back to the Iris Inn, and enjoy them in the coolness of your room, or on the front porch, overlooking the Valley.
